Decision Height by Meredith Dayna Levy

Directors Notes
"Why do you fly?” Ziggie Lewis, instructor to the WASPs, charges each trainee with this question. It’s a question which, unfortunately, we so often forget to ask ourselves: why do we do the things we do? And if we know the answer, how is it that we are encouraging others to fulfill their potential as artists, students, athletes, professionals, leaders— as humans?

When I first read Decision Height, I was struck by the importance of purposeful community, specifically, the importance of Sisterhood. True friendship is difficult. It takes work. Unity depends on mutual respect, understanding, and grace.

We are not meant to struggle through life alone. We are called to work past our prejudices in order to create an intentionally supportive community focused on loving and encouraging each other.

The women in Decision Height learn to listen to this calling, but first they must discover the answer to Ziggie's question. Certainly, the characters have their flaws; they, like us, are imperfect. Yet, despite their shortcomings, they encourage me to live deliberately, to love wholeheartedly, and to motivate others to do the same.

As you watch this production, I challenge you to consider: what is it that gets you up in the morning? What is it that you are passionate about? And who are the people that stand alongside you?

In other words:

       Why do you fly?
